Known for both his comedic and dramatic role, he is one of the most loved and well-known film stars in the world and is considered an American popular culture icon. Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born in Concord, California, to Janet Marylyn a hospital worker, and Amos Mefford Hanks, an itinerant cook. The family of his mother, initially named "Fraga" and was 100% Portuguese, while his father was of predominantly English origins. Tom was raised in what he described as a "fractured" family. He had no experience acting in college and credits his inability get a role in a college production with starting his career. He auditioned in the city for a play in the theater for community members. Director invited him to Cleveland and that's how his acting career started.
